When I created a new folder to hold the First Impressions submissions for this year, I realized that Marcy Hatch and I have been doing this for FOUR YEARS! It seems hard to believe!

Lately, we’ve seen a decline of submissions. We only had two in December, none in January, and one in February. Usually, we’re swamped with submissions after November and NaNoWriMo. In an effort to re-awaken interest, I thought I would highlight some of the past submissions that went on to become published books (or about-to-be-published books). Please note, I’m not — ahem, claiming credit for these books getting published — just celebrating the fact that Marcy and I may have given the authors food-for-thought on that all important First Impression!

Waiting for April

WAITING ON APRIL by Jaime Loren (coming February 12)

April Fletcher has died nineteen times… but she doesn’t know itAs far as April is concerned, she’s just a normal seventeen-year-old, looking forward to spending spring break with her friends and going to college in the fall. April doesn’t know she has never lived past her eighteenth birthday, nor does she realize that Scott Parker, her best friend, is actually her childhood sweetheart and fiancé from her very first life. For Scott Parker, spending quality time with his soul mate has proved difficult ever since her tragic death in 1729. Since then he has lost her an additional eighteen times—each of her deaths more devastating than the last, and each of her births wiping the slate of her memory clean. Unable to save her but unwilling to give up, Scott has to hide the fact he’s immortal—and will be until April confesses her love again.

Unfortunately, Stan’s fending off his impossible cousin Geri, evil Granny, and Mama’s suitors like Cold-Blooded Killer Stinky Pete. Hot Flashes and Cold Lemonade

HOT FLASHES AND COLD LEMONADE by Susan Flett Swiderski

Living the perfect life has always been easy peasy for Pearl Bryzinski, because she’s practically a pro at ignoring the negative and putting a positive spin on the facts, but it’s impossible for her to find anything positive about Daddy skipping town with that blue-haired floozy in a flashy brown Pinto. No matter how hard she tries, she can’t ignore the fact that he’s gone… or the fact that she’s becoming a drama queen who can sweat like a sumo wrestler doing push-ups in a sauna. It’s almost enough to suck the blush out of her rose-colored glasses. Whether she likes it or not, she’s gonna have to turn some of her wishbone into backbone. Layer by layer, assumptions and misconceptions peel away, as Pearl learns to buck up in the face of reality, and to laugh at her imperfect… but not so bad… life.
