When I created a new folder to hold the First Impressions submissions for this year, I realized that Marcy Hatch and I have been doing this for FOUR YEARS! It seems hard to believe!
Lately, we’ve seen a decline of submissions. We only had two in December, none in January, and one in February. Usually, we’re swamped with submissions after November and NaNoWriMo. In an effort to re-awaken interest, I thought I would highlight some of the past submissions that went on to become published books (or about-to-be-published books). Please note, I’m not — ahem, claiming credit for these books getting published — just celebrating the fact that Marcy and I may have given the authors food-for-thought on that all important First Impression!
WAITING ON APRIL by Jaime Loren (coming February 12)
April Fletcher has died nineteen times… but she doesn’t know it. As far as April is concerned, she’s just a normal seventeen-year-old, looking forward to spending spring break with her friends and going to college in the fall. April doesn’t know she has never lived past her eighteenth birthday, nor does she realize that Scott Parker, her best friend, is actually her childhood sweetheart and fiancé from her very first life. For Scott Parker, spending quality time with his soul mate has proved difficult ever since her tragic death in 1729. Since then he has lost her an additional eighteen times—each of her deaths more devastating than the last, and each of her births wiping the slate of her memory clean. Unable to save her but unwilling to give up, Scott has to hide the fact he’s immortal—and will be until April confesses her love again.

MY NEAR-DEATH ADVENTURES (99% TRUE) by Alison DeCamp (coming February 24)
There are many things that 11-year-old Stanley Slater would like to have in life, most of all, a father. But what if Stan’s missing dad isn’t “dearly departed” after all? Who better to find this absent hero/cowboy/outlaw than manly Stan himself? Unfortunately, Stan’s fending off his impossible cousin Geri, evil Granny, and Mama’s suitors like Cold-Blooded Killer Stinky Pete. If only he could join the River Drive, the most perilous adventure of all, where even a fellow’s peavey is at risk. It’s a wild ride for Stan as he finds out about true manliness. But at least Stan has his scrapbook, full of 200 black-and-white 19th-century advertisements and photos, “augmented” with his commentary and doodles.

SOULLESS (Maiden of Time, Vol. 2) by Crystal Collier
The Soulless are coming… Alexia manipulated time to save the man of her dreams, and lost her best friend to red-eyed wraiths. Still grieving, she struggles to reconcile her loss with what was gained: her impending marriage. But when her wedding is destroyed by the Soulless—who then steal the only protection her people have—she’s forced to unleash her true power. And risk losing everything.
HOT FLASHES AND COLD LEMONADE by Susan Flett Swiderski
Living the perfect life has always been easy peasy for Pearl Bryzinski, because she’s practically a pro at ignoring the negative and putting a positive spin on the facts, but it’s impossible for her to find anything positive about Daddy skipping town with that blue-haired floozy in a flashy brown Pinto. No matter how hard she tries, she can’t ignore the fact that he’s gone… or the fact that she’s becoming a drama queen who can sweat like a sumo wrestler doing push-ups in a sauna. It’s almost enough to suck the blush out of her rose-colored glasses. Whether she likes it or not, she’s gonna have to turn some of her wishbone into backbone. Layer by layer, assumptions and misconceptions peel away, as Pearl learns to buck up in the face of reality, and to laugh at her imperfect… but not so bad… life.
BUTTERMAN’S (TIME) TRAVEL INC by Pk Hrezo
It’s the year 2069 and even though eighteen-year-old Bianca Butterman is heir to the family biz, she may never see the day her time-craft license becomes official. When a government agent starts nosing around the operation, Butterman Travel, Inc. gets stuck with a full audit—part of a government take-over scheme to shut down all private time travel agencies. Enter former boy band superstar, Tristan Helms, desperate to retrieve a lost item from his past and willing to pay triple fare for a time-trip to get there, and Bianca has to find a way to complete the job and return home before the government gets wind and shuts down the family biz for good.
Tsunamis reduced the USA into a shell of itself, called The Fold. Surviving humans and vampires joined forces to form The Colony, where registered citizens do as they’re told. They donate blood quarterly and dream of being chosen as Attendees for the Jubilee celebrations, that is, everyone except Macie Breen. With high school graduation near, she’s anxious to ditch the rules in hopes of starting a new life with Thane, an unregistered and also her best friend. Her hopes fizzle when Macie is selected as an Attendee, forever registered. Any future with Thane…impossible. Being chosen comes with another unexpected price. Truths about The Colony blaze into ashes and lies when she discovers the vampires haven’t kept their part of the bargain. Worst still, Macie’s life unravels as her stint in the city of Bliss forces her to face daunting truths about who, and what, she really is.
First Impressions – November 2012
These are just the first 6 books I could think of that debuted here on First Impressions. If you know of any others, tell me and I’ll feature them in another post.
FAQs about First Impressions and directions to submit are on the sidebar! Come see us, and tell your friends. We love getting a peek at your first page!
Awesome all the books that are published that you and Marcy have helped with the first important pages.
I know several of those authors! That’s awesome they went from first impressions to published.
When I actually write something new, I’ll try to submit it 🙂 I haven’t done any writing in a while since life has kind of taken over for a bit. But hopefully soon I can get back on track! How cool that these have all gone on to being published!
OMG! I hadn’t realized it has been four years. Sharing on First Impressions was both scary and necessary. I’m glad I did it. Thanks so much for the feedback. It really helped.
Hey, I recognize all those books! How awesome they all did the “first impressions”.
What a great track record! I will help spread the word. First Impressions was a big help to me. Still working on the same novel… will hopefully submit something new later this year.
Nice track record, Dianne! Here’s to another 4 years.
Wow! You gals have an impressive track record. You’ve done a terrific job, and we’re all very grateful for your help. Here’s to another four years! (And then some!)
First Pages was a great experience for me, especially at that time in my writing life when I wanted and needed feedback. I’ve always been appreciative of the opportunity. Thank you!
I’ve read some of those – great books! I’ll be sending over my first page soon.
Yay! I love that you two have been offering this service for so long. It’s been a blessing to many. I’m thinking it’s time to tap into some of the younger writer circles, eh? Not sure where they hang out, but I’m beginning to wonder if blogging is an “older author” sport.
Four years is a long time in blogging years. Congratulations!
I think I’ll have to check out the Butterman book.
Four years! Holy cow! I think you and Marcy are incredibly kind and generous to help writers with their first pages. The crits are always so spot on. I can’t imagine why the subs are falling. Perhaps fewer people are querying agents and think first pages aren’t quite as important anymore. How wrong they are!
Quite a record of success, there. ^_^ When I actually have a book that I’m trying to get published, I’ll definitely remember this.
